Press Release - Candidates should address cattle industry during election

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saskatoon, SK October 11, 2007 - The challenges facing the Saskatchewan cattle industry, including an inability to effectively compete in the global market under current conditions, are the top priorities for the Saskatchewan's cattle industry during the provincial election campaign announced yesterday.

"It is fair to say that the cattle industry in this province is in crisis mode," says Susan Echlin, General Manager of the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association. "BSE has turned out to be but the beginning of a number of issues that have made it difficult for cattle producers to make a living. Regulations surrounding risk materials and associated costs, other challenges faced by packing industry, the rising Canadian dollar and the increased cost of feed grains are a sample of the many issues that are all combining to make a perfect storm of disaster for many in the industry."

Many cattle producers have been struggling since BSE first hit in 2003 and the latest round of challenges may force many out of business. The beef industry in Saskatchewan contributes hundreds of millions annually to the provincial economy, but will decline unless conditions are addressed.

"We hope that candidates recognize that the cattle industry is an important part of this province's economic success, and that ignoring the issues facing cattle producers will do nothing but speed the decimation of the industry," says Echlin. "There are 22,000 voters in this province who make part of their livelihood from cattle. We hope the candidates consider them when on the election trail and in forming policy after the election on November 7."
